Memorial Day

Memorial Day dates to 1865 in Charleston, SC. Historians claim that the "liberated citizens" of Charleston held a very large memorial ceremony honoring the deceased Union POW victims of the horrific "Race Track POW camp". The ceremony was led by 3,000 black school children and was followed by some 10,000 parade participants. The famous 54th Massachusetts along with the 34th and 104th United States Colored Troops marched in the solemn ceremony. Much of this has been "lost" to history until recently. In 1868 the GAR (Grand Army Of The Republic) declared May 30th as "Decoration Day" when the nation (North and South) adorned veteran grave sites with flags and flowers. The tradition continues...

The unofficial kickoff to the summer season is underway. The buzz in the crowd seems to be one of relief over winter's final passing, seems as though the "winter to remember" is hard to forget.

Great South Bay May

The sunset on the Great South Bay has been elusive this month. As the holiday weekend approaches I am aware that the month has slipped by in a rainy and cloudy fashion. Last night's perfect weather was a treat and I couldn't resist the old "cheesy" sunset shot! :-)

Craving Warmth

I'm missing the Caribbean. I know it was a cold winter but this spring isn't up for any awards in my part of the world. Damp, dreary and cool continues here on Long Island.

Laughing It Up

Laughing gulls can be most entertaining with their aerial acrobatics and their apparent sense of humor. Something about being on the water and hearing their "ha, ha, ha" call that puts a smile on my face!

Waterside Table

What is it about getting a table with a waterside view when you are spending a week on a boat with a 360 degree unobstructed vista of the ocean?? I must confess that we did often "insist" upon getting that table "with a view". I suppose that even a week in paradise still has it's requirements. And yes...Life is Good! :-)

The Baths

Virgin Gorda's iconic "Baths" is a geological wonder. The labyrinth of beach boulders and cave like trails is a major attraction (Yikes!). Beware of the cruise ship crowds... :-)

The Helm

No problems with visibility here! Our most useful piece of electronics, without a doubt, was the auto-pilot! :-)

Last Light

For me, every sunset has it's own beauty. Some, however, leave a lasting impression and a smile on the memory.

Dinner

Three to four pounds is the norm on Anegada! Life is good.

Dotsy's Bakery

On the island of Anegada, a short taxi ride will take you to Dotsy's Bakery. On an island of 200 inhabitants, Anegada is home to seven churches ( Yes..seven, do the math!) and one bakery. Dotsy's sinful creations are worth the trip from the dock to the "Settlement". I highly recommend the guava pie. :-)

Moorings Power 474

Our condo on the water was complete with four staterooms and four heads. As three couples we managed to remain friends due to the ample room on the bridge, fore deck, main salon and the large aft seating area. Of course the lengthy cocktail hour also kept everyone in good humor. :-)
