Equal Access

Navigating Florida's highways and waterways is a shared venture. Motorists and boaters have a patience that comes with co-existence. A travel tip: be aware which bridges open "on demand" and which have an hourly schedule. Boaters become acutely aware of "vertical clearance" and tidal fluctuations. Eventually everyone reaches their destination but "catching the bridge" can effect one's on time arrival. :-)

Florida's Pelicans
The ubiquitous Brown Pelican may not "rule" the skies above Florida's landscape but there is no doubt that they are masters of every fishing pier. Graceful in flight and talented swimmers, the pelican is awkward and clumsy on foot yet stealthy at stealing a fisherman's bait. On my side of the camera they always seem to be aware and watchful. They certainly appear to appreciate fresh seafood...

That's A Crock
A cousin of the common alligator, the American Crocodile's only habitat in the U.S. is southern Florida. Currently, we are told, the population of these once threatened reptiles is about 2,000 individuals and appears to be on the rise. Supposedly these saltwater tolerant crocodiles are much less aggressive than their more numerous alligator relatives. AND that fact sounds like a real crock to me!

Watering Hole
Along Florida's Intracoastal Waterway one sees all manner of vessels, from kayaks to megayachts, they're all passing by. So why not the Bar Boat? This one is complete with a water slide (to perhaps help you enjoy your mudslide). After-all, most commuter trains have a bar car and you can still buy a drink with your $5.00 snack on Delta. So.. the Bar Boat it is, soon crusing to a port near you ... :-)

Turtle Time
Remember all those nature shows depicting the endangered turtle nesting areas? March 1st, for those Loggerheads with calendars, marks the start of the sea turtle's reproductive cycle. Not to be accused of hiding in a shell, county and state officials have enacted strict protective measures to aid beach-destined female turtles. No beach lights on piers or resorts until November, and of course, don't even consider a turtle egg omelet.
